2nd EU terminology seminar for Russian delegates

A group of 26 English teachers at the European Studies Institute of the State University in Moscow (MGIMO) participated in a seminar on EU terminology organised by the Development Office from 29 January till 5 February.
During the first part, an external speaker from the European Commission presented an in-depth overview of various EU policies. Practitioners from the College of Europe and the University College Ghent then shared their expertise in EU terminology and EU Russian terminology in particular. A visit to DG Interpretation in Brussels rounded up the programme.
As the participants were staying together in Bruges, there was also time for social activities before and after the lectures. This included common meals as well as guided tours of Bruges, the College of Europe’s main premises, specialised library and the Verversdijk extension where the Development Office is situated.
The programme was organised in the framework of an academic partnership between the Development Office of the College of Europe and MGIMO.

Introductory Seminar on International Humanitarian Law

In the light of the most recent developments of the Common Security and Defence Policy, the Development Office and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organised an introductory seminar on International Humanitarian Law. The event took place on 15-17 February at the College of Europe Bruges campus.

The programme focussed on the implementation of International Humanitarian Law by the European Union and was targeted at European studies candidates from the Benelux-countries, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
Several legal and EU practitioners gave an introduction to the topic. Among them were Prof. Yves Sandoz from the University of Geneva, Mr. Paul Berman from the UK’s Cabinet Office and Mr. Stéphane Kolanowski from the ICRC Brussels delegation. The sessions and debates focused on various aspects of International Humanitarian Law – starting with a general historical overview to more concrete aspects like the protection of victims of the war, the conduction of hostilities, the EU framework and future perspectives. All 30 participants followed the seminar with great interest and were rewarded with a certificate of attendance.
The next activity on International Humanitarian Law will be the annual ICRC Colloquium taking place in Bruges on 21-22 October 2010.
