The College of Europe was chosen as the logical place to host the centre. Since its creation in 1949, the College has been an institution with unparalleled influence on the study and development of EU law.

A substantial number of former students of the College of Europe are now in commanding positions in industry, the legal profession, EU Institutions, and national Governments. The College's Law department contains a number of leading competition law experts from academia and private practice. The GCLC will thus be able to draw on the large pool of knowledge and expertise which already exists at the College.
Moreover, the College of Europe is ideally located in the city of Bruges in Belgium. Being based in Bruges provides many advantages as it is only one hour from Brussels, two-and-a-half hours from Paris, and in close range of a number of other large cities and economic centres, such as Amsterdam, London and Düsseldorf/Köln. Bruges itself is a beautiful, historical city, and a convenient place for international meetings and conferences. Since the early 1990s, the College of Europe has a second campus in Warsaw (Natolin), which is the ideal place for those wishing to experience first-hand the developments that are taking place in this part of Europe.
